A Bergen ZIP code directory is most useful when it keeps postal service, municipal boundaries, and parcel records in separate lanes. Start with the full address and confirm its delivery format. Then identify the legal municipality before opening a county record. A postal area can narrow a search, but it cannot identify who is at an address or draw a town line. The right result is a dated postal answer paired with the local record source that fits the question, whether that question involves a parcel, map, directory, or civic record.

Bergen ZIP Code Areas

Bergen's postal inventory is organized around recognized postal places, not a one-to-one map of its municipalities. The rows below are representative, fully research-backed entries from the working inventory. They are useful starting points for an address check, not a claim that every street in a municipality uses one postal designation. USPS should confirm every live address before a result is saved, shared, or used to choose a local records office.

The working inventory is not an exhaustive USPS export for all 70 municipalities. It deliberately keeps postal place and legal municipality apart, and it leaves special, unique, or box-service designations for address-level confirmation. That is especially important where the source lists a neighboring delivery context or tells the reader to verify the borough and street.

The Bergen County Planning Census Data page is a useful county source for geography and municipal data.

County statistical material helps describe an area, but it does not replace USPS delivery validation for an individual address.

Confirm a Bergen ZIP Code

The official USPS ZIP Lookup supplies three distinct workflows: address-to-ZIP, city/state-to-all-ZIPs, and ZIP-to-cities. For an address check, enter the street address, city, state, and an optional apartment or suite. For a broader check, use city and state to return the associated postal areas, then test the full address separately. Save the exact input, result city, result ZIP or ZIP+4, query date, and any USPS warning with a research note.

USPS Input or WorkflowWhat the Research Supports
Street addressUsed for address-to-ZIP confirmation.
City and stateUsed for city/state-to-all-ZIPs lookup.
Apartment or suiteOptional address detail for the USPS form.
ZIP valueUsed for ZIP-to-cities lookup.

USPS explicitly says that a result does not confirm that a person or company is at the address. It confirms postal formatting and service information only.

Search Bergen Postal Records

Use a postal result to narrow place names and local record offices, then keep the property, election, and historical layers separate. The county property route uses municipality, address, block, lot, and owner information where available. It was not documented as a ZIP filter during research. Bergen's voter-list process requires a written request, and the live state lookup fields were blocked from inspection. A postal result therefore starts a local search; it does not produce a countywide roster.

  1. Enter the complete address in USPS and retain the returned postal city, ZIP, ZIP+4 when given, and query date.
  2. Use Bergen's official municipality list to identify the legal municipality rather than relying only on the postal city.
  3. Open the county-linked property route with the confirmed municipality plus address or block and lot.
  4. For a dated voter record, follow the state registration route or Bergen's written-request process with a clear date and district scope.
  5. Once the search is narrowed to a road, use the Bergen street directory workflow for parcel and recorded-instrument context.

Bergen's County Clerk says public voter lists and reports require a written request. A registered-voter list has a stated per-district charge, while a mail-in-ballot list has a stated per-page charge. Either request needs a defined date and scope, and neither is a universal current-residence record. The state registration route is useful for an individual check, but its live fields were not available for inspection during research.

This postal reference is strongest at postal geography. It should hand street-level questions to address-keyed records and historical household questions to date-stamped collections.

Note: A valid postal result narrows an area, but municipal boundaries and source dates still control a records search.

Bergen ZIP Property Route

The Bergen Board of Taxation links to the county's Property Record Search. County guidance identifies owner, property location or address, municipality, block, and lot as practical search paths. The source does not support a ZIP search field, and the external property's current live labels, historical coverage, pagination, export options, and redaction behavior need verification. Use the postal result to select the likely municipality, not to assume the property screen accepts a postal filter.

Block and lotUseful parcel references for tax and land-record work.

Live screen detailsField labels, coverage, and display behavior remain a research gap.

The Board of Taxation page is the verified county page behind that property-search route.

Parcel results should be read as assessment context and then checked against the appropriate Clerk instrument or municipal assessor record.

Bergen ZIP Cities and Municipalities

Bergen has 70 municipalities, which makes municipal identity a practical part of postal research. The same address can carry a USPS-recognized city that is not the legal municipality used by a tax map, election office, or historic deed index. Border and corridor areas need special care. The research specifically flags Edgewater, Fairview, Fort Lee, Cliffside Park, Lodi, Rutherford, Lyndhurst, and other border communities for address-level checking because county, municipal, and postal boundaries do not align neatly.

The official Bergen County municipality list supplies the legal-place reference.

For older records, add predecessor names to the search: Norwood came from Harrington Township, and Lyndhurst was previously Union Township. Wallington's later territorial transfer to Garfield and Ridgewood's annexations are further reminders that an old record can be indexed under a different local term. Those facts explain indexing differences without proving an address history.

Bergen ZIP Geography and Census ZCTAs

Census ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, or ZCTAs, are generalized statistical areas. They are not USPS delivery routes and should not be used to validate a mailing address. A ZCTA may be useful for comparing data in a broad area, while a postal lookup answers a different question about the address entered that day. Keep the two source types separate in any Bergen location note.

Bergen Planning identifies ACS 2020-24 material, historical data running from 1900 to 2020, and information for the county's 70 municipalities. Those county resources can help frame a population or geographic question after the downloaded table and its vintage are checked. They do not turn a Census boundary into a postal-service answer.

The Census ZCTA guidance explains the distinction between its statistical geography and USPS ZIP delivery geography.

Use a ZCTA for a statistical comparison only after recording the vintage and source, then return to USPS for current delivery validation.

Note: Postal geography can change, so a historical directory's postal city may not match a current USPS result.

Bergen ZIP Exceptions to Check

Some Bergen entries deserve an extra check before they are attached to a record. The inventory identifies 07602 as Hackensack PO-box or special-delivery service to verify, 07653 as Paramus PO-box service to verify, and 07699 as Hackensack special or PO-box service to verify. These labels describe the source inventory's caution, not a promise about present service. They should trigger an address-specific USPS result rather than a broad conclusion from the first three digits or a postal-place label.

Postal ambiguity is especially important along the Hudson, Passaic, and county-border corridors. Record the postal city, legal municipality, county, and source date in distinct fields. That simple habit helps explain why a property or historical-directory search can miss when only a ZIP or mailing city was supplied. It also avoids converting a post-office-box designation or a broad delivery area into a claim about a street, parcel, or household.

Bergen Postal Record Limits

A Bergen postal reference does not reveal a current resident, prove a municipal boundary, or convert an assessment owner field into an occupancy claim. It organizes postal areas and points toward the correct local custodian. For a specific address, pair the USPS result with the municipality, parcel, and record date. For a historic address, also retain old street names, predecessor places, and the directory or map year. Date each result and name the source before relying on it.

ZIP and ZIP+4
A ZIP identifies a postal delivery area; ZIP+4 adds a more specific delivery segment for an address or delivery point.
PO-box ZIP
A postal designation used for post-office boxes or special service rather than a general street-delivery conclusion.
Unique ZIP
A ZIP associated with a particular organization or delivery arrangement and requiring address-level verification.
Carrier route
A delivery sequence used by postal operations, not a legal municipal boundary or personal record.

Protected-address rules still apply when an address appears in a public system. Daniel's Law can require redaction of eligible people from parcel and tax-list services, while New Jersey's Address Confidentiality Program gives eligible participants a legal substitute address. A missing or redacted entry should be treated as a legal limit, not as an invitation to find another route around it.
